HAYDEN SS2019 – A GIRL IN WONDERLAND

Inspiration for HAYDEN SS 2019 – A GIRL IN WONDERLAND is drawn by the sight and vibrant colors of the Supertree Grove at Gardens by the Bay.

A perfect combination of nature and technology. There are 18 Supertrees in all at Gardens by the Bay and 12 at the Supertree Grove. Over 162,900 varieties of bromeliads, orchids, ferns, and tropical flowering climbers have been planted on the Supertrees with a heart of circuitry under a skin of leaf and vine.

Each Supertree is made up of four major components — the reinforcement concrete core, the trunk, planting panels, and a canopy. Designed to resemble trees, they’re meant to function like them as well. Some are equipped with solar panels to store energy for the nightly light show, while others are used as air exhaust receptacles to help cool the Flower Dome and Cloud Forest conservatories. On top of that, they all collect rainwater for use in irrigation and fountain displays. Photosynthesis, cooling the air, and storing rainwater — like actual trees indeed!

Unknown to most visitors is a Supertree that acts as a chimney stack. It expels non-toxic fumes from a biomass boiler where plant waste from Gardens by the Bay and other parts of Singapore is burnt and converted into fuel. The burnt waste powers a steam turbine, which subsequently produces part of the energy needed to chill the two cooled conservatories, minimising energy used from external sources.

When day turns to night, the Supertrees come alive. The Garden Rhapsody light show is free and starts around 7:45PM and 8:45PM nightly.

Lit up in the evenings, the diligent trees continue multi-tasking with their very own light and sound show using colourful sequential lighting and music, illuminating the darkness and providing much visual enjoyment from an aerial perspective

68 independent audio speakers are used during the show to simulate “live” musicians performing at various spots. This has been created by award-winning lighting designer Adrian Tan and one of Singapore’s most sought-after music composers and arrangers, Bang Wenfu.

These are not just pretty sculptures meant to be admired but do nothing. They also serve a function – a function that is consistent with the city-state’s push to create lush environments, renewable energy, and future sustainability. 

A fusion of nature, art and technology, it’s no surprise that the Supertrees have become landmarks of Singapore instantaneously recognisable to all!
